Open Mic Fridays

We’re excited to announce Open Mic Fridays in 3C!  This is an opportunity for students to showcase their fluent reading by getting up in front of an audience with a microphone and reading aloud a short story or poem.

Open Mic Fridays will take place on Friday afternoons from 2:00-2:30. Individual students will sign up, practice, and be ready to share in front of an audience. We invite you to join us, especially if your child is reading! If your child has signed up to read, you will receive a special invitation from him or her to join us.

Our first Open Mic Friday will be next Friday, November 22.
We hope that you will attend and we thank you for your support at home.

The Week in Review

At the end of each week our class takes some time to reflect on what was learned, what went well, what problems we may have had and how we solved them. We call this "The Week in Review." Individual students complete a one page reflection paper that contains sentence starters to help guide them in their responses. Please look for this paper at the end of each school week, and use them to talk with your child about his/her learning. Pay close attention to your child's goal for the coming week, and check in with during the next week to see how he/she is working toward achieving this goal.  Allowing time to reflect and discuss each week strengthens our classroom community and deepens our academic understanding. Thank you for supporting "The Week in Review."

Read Aloud Mondays

We LOVE listening to read alouds in 3C! Whether the book is a fictional story, non-fiction article, poem, or more, we enjoy it all.
Listening to stories read aloud allows us the chance to hear what fluent reading sounds like, as well as giving us access to information that may be just above our “just-right” reading level.

We are looking for new voices to share this experience with us. If you have a love of reading, and would like to read aloud to us, please sign up. Maybe you have a favorite story that you already know you’d like to share, or maybe you need some help choosing that perfect book, we’re here to guide you. Just let us know!

The perfect time for these read aloud experiences is on
Mondays from 2:15 to 2:30.

Check out the schedule that was sent home today, choose a date that works best for you, sign up, and we’ll see you then!
Happy Reading!

Stevens Memorial Library

Our first field trip is in the books...literally! We walked to the Stevens Memorial Library today and met with Mrs. S the children's book room librarian. She talked with us about the different areas of the children's book room, award winners, and we even introduced her to a new series that she will soon order for her shelves! Although the walk to and from the library proved to be challenging for some students, once inside all were a perfect audience. Kudos to you for bringing your child to the library as often as you do, and please continue to visit often. It is a great resource and connection to your child's 3rd grade year.

3C's Rules

It's been a long, productive process, but we finally made it to the end! We have our rules for the classroom. It all started with the students generating a list of all the rules they believed were important for us to follow. This list contained a lot of "Don't do..." and "No..." We worked at turning those negative statements around into positive ones that stated what we should do. From there we worked the long list into categories, and then named each category. The list was narrowed down to a few final choices and then today the students voted on which ones they believed would help us do our best learning every day. And the winners are:

"Do Your Best Work"
"Show Empathy For Others"
"Take Responsibility For Your Actions"

We will be working hard every day to maintain a positive learning climate that lives and breathes by these reminders. Take Care.

Picture Day

We'll be taking a whole-school picture outside tomorrow and Mr. Landry has asked that all students wear white shirts. If you have an all white (or mostly white) shirt to wear tomorrow, please do! Check back soon to see the picture. Smile! :)

Off to a Great Start!

Our first week of school is over and we are on our way to beginning a new one. Last week was busy with new friends, new classroom, new teachers, new supplies, and being upstairs! There were (and continue to be) many routines and expectations to follow. The students have been doing very well with remembering all these important parts of our day. We had a chance to do many "get to know you" activities to help build our classroom community, and we'll continue to participate in these as we become more comfortable with one another.

This week our focus is on our hopes and goals for third grade, creating our classroom rules, and completing beginning of the year assessments. These are great ways for us to continue to get to know one another as learners.

Thank you to all who checked the supply list provided at both the end of last school year and this summer as well. Having the necessary supplies allows your child to be successful every day. If there are some things that you were unable to get and/or still need to send in, please do so as soon as possible.

Check back often for important information!
